He came from Amsterdam, where his brother Willem was a merchant as la
te as 1700. He was in New Amsterdam before 1655, and two years later in Be
verwyck, where he continued to reside till his death, about 1691. His ho
me lot, in Albany was on the south side of Yonker [now State] Street, t
he third east from Pearl Street, as it then was. When Arent Van Curler beg
an the settlement of Schenectady in 1662, he became one of the original fi
fteen proprietors. Farms number six on the Bouwland, were allotted to hi
m, and his village lot comprised the northerly quarter of the block, bound
ed by Washington, Union, Church and State Streets. His son Evert held th
is property till 1702, when he disposed of it to Isaac Swits. Gerrit Banck
er married Elisabeth, daughter of Dirk Van Eps, and sister of Jan Van Ep
s, one of the first settlers of Schenectady.
