Mahaut was born in Avesnes, Pas-de-Calais, France.  Mahaut's father was Jacob Van Avesnes and her mother was Adelheid Van Guise.  Her paternal grandparents were Nicholas "Plukiel" d'Avesnes and Matilda de Lange Roche; her maternal grandparents were Bernard de Guise and Alix. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Gautier II, Jacques, Guy, Bouchard, Ida and Adelaide.  She died after July 1237.


Mahaut's first family with Nicholas Rumigny

‌Mahaut and Nicholas were married in a religious ceremony about 1182.  They had four sons and a daughter, named Nicholas V, Hugues I, Jacques De Florennes-La, Jean and Beatrice.


Mahaut's second family with Ludwig IV Von Chiney

‌Mahaut and Ludwig IV were married in a religious ceremony about 1192 in Chiny, Indre-et-Loire, France.  They had a daughter named Johanna.
