William of was born in 1143 in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, England.  William of's father was Henry Stewart and his mother was Ada of Surrey.  His paternal grandparents were David I "The Saint" of Scotland and Matilda Margaret De Huntingdon; his maternal grandparents were William De Warenne and Isabel Elizabeth De Vermandois. He had two brothers and a sister, named David of, Malcolm IV of and Ada. He had a half-sister named Avice or Avicia.  He died at the age of 71 on December 4th, 1214 in Stirling, Scotland.  He was buried in Arbroath Abbey, Tay, Scotland.

‌William of and Ermengarde were married in a religious ceremony in 1186 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England.  They had a son and three daughters, named Alexander II of, Ada of, Margaret of and Marjory of.
