Herman II was born about 1172 in Lippe, Germany. Herman II's father was Bernhard II Lippe and his mother was Heilwig Von Are-Hostaden. His paternal grandfather was Hermann Lippe; his maternal grandparents were Otto de Are de Hostaden and Adelheid Von Hostaden. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Bernhard, Dietrich, Gerhard II, Otto, Adelheid, Beatrix, Elisabeth, Ethelind, Gertrud, Heilwig and Kunigunde.
