Charles I of was born in Frankfurt Am Main, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen.  Charles I of's father was Ludovico Pio and his mother was Judith von Andechs.  His paternal grandparents were Carolus Magnus and Hildegarde of Savoy; his maternal grandparents were Welf III Von Argenau and Hedwig von Sachsen. He had two sisters named Gisele and Adelheid. He had six half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Gerard, Arnulf, Pepin, Louis the, Lothar I of, Ludwig II, Aupais of, Hildegarde, Dhouda, Rotrude, Adelaide and Beatrice.  He died in while crossing the pass of the Mont Cenis.
