William I "The Great" of was born about 1040 in Bourgogne, France.  William I "The Great" of's father was Renaud I de Bourgogne and his mother was Alice Adelaide de Normandie.  His paternal grandparents were Orthon-William of Macon and Ermentrude (Irmtrude) of Rheims; his maternal grandparents were Richard II of Normandy and Judith De Rennes.  He was an only child.  He died in Besancon, France.  He was buried in Besancon, France.
