Richard Randolph, of Morton hall, Warwickshire, England had a son, William Randolph who was born in 1651 and died in 1711. He came to Virginia in 1674 and settled on Turkey Island. He married Mary Isham, daughter of Henry and Catherine Isham of Bermuda Hundred on James River. This Col. William Randolph was the speaker of the house of burgesses. He was the head of the house of Randolph in America, and from him descended those of this illustrious name who have figured so conspicuously in the annals of Virginia and of the nation. Col William Randolph and his wife, Mary Isham, left nine children; of whom the third son, Isham Randolph "of Dungeness" was born 1690 and died December 1742. He was at one time agent for the colony of Virginia in London, England He was married in 1717 to Jane Rogers of Shadwell Street in that city. Upon his return to America he was appointed in 1738, Adjutant General of Virginia. he was Colonel of Goochland County Militia in 1740; also member of the houes of burgesses. When he built his seat, about 1735, which he called Dungeness" on James River, some forty miles above Richmond, it was on the frontier; and was probably constructed after the manner of a fortress to resist any attacks that might be made by Indians or others. The house was destroyed by fire in 1885. The will of Col. Isham Randolph dated April 6, 1741, was proved December 21, 1742. It provides for a promised payument of the sum of 200 Pounds to Peter Jefferson, upon his marriage with my daughter Jane, and appoints Jefferson one of the guardians of his children. The will of his widow, dated December 5, 1750 was proved July 21, 1761. Her daughters were married as follows: (1) Jane Randolph married Peter Jefferson, marriage bond dated October 3, 1739. They were the parents of Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States. (2) Mary Randolph married Charles Lewis, Jr.; marriage bond dated July 15, 1746. (3) Elizabeth Randolph married November 1750, Col. John Railey of Stonehenge in Chesterfield, County. (4) Dorothea Randolph was married October 28, 1751, to Col. John Woodson, and died February 2, 1974. (5) Anne Randolph was married three times; first on November 26, 1751, to Daniel Scott; second, to John Pleasants, and third to James Pleasants of Contention. The last two were Quakers.
