Berenguela was born in Barcelona,Spain.  Berenguela's father was Count of Barcelona Ramon (Raymond) (el Grande) Berenger III and her mother was Dulce Aldonza Milaud Gevaudan.  Her paternal grandparents were Count of Barcelona, Gerona, Osona, Carcasonne, and Radez Ramon (Raymond) (Cabeza d'Estope (tow-head)) Berenger II and Matilda d'Hauteville; her maternal grandfather is Gerbert de Carlat. She had a brother named The Saint. She had a half-sister named Chimene Diaz.  She died in Palencia,Leon,Spain.  She was buried in Cathedral del Santiago El Mayor del Compostella.

‌Berenguela and Alfonso were married in a religious ceremony in November 1128 in Saldana,Spain.  They had five sons and two daughters, named Alfonso, Raimundo, The Desired, Fernando, Garcia, Sancha Infanta and Constance.
