Beret was born in 1789 in , Haltdalen, S-Trnd., Norway. Beret's father was Ola Estensen and her mother was Kersti Eliasdatter. Her paternal grandfather was Esten Olsen and her paternal grandmother is Ingeborg Olsdatter; her maternal grandparents were Elias Inbrektsen and Barbro Olsdatter. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Elias, Ola, Inbor, Barbro and Gunhil. She is the youngest of the six children.-
