Hawis was born in 1075 in Umberleigh, Devon, England.1 Hawis' father was William De Vernon and her mother was Emma Fitzosbern. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh De Vernon and De Centville. She had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, Hugh, Richard, Richard De Vernon and Adela. She is the youngest of the six children.-
