General Notes

John Davies moved with his parents through Virginia to Orange County, now Chatham, around 1750. He resided between Cane Creek and Rocky River in Chatham Co. A corner of the land was on the river and a tract on the waters of Cane Creek. He apparently inherited part of it from his father and he purchased the Cane Creek tract from H. McCullah in 1758. He deeded part of this to son, Thomas in 1761. Thomas sold it to Jeremiah Piggott, Sr. 7-21-1769. John, of Chatham Co., purchases land from Jermiah Piggott, Jr. of Orange Co., Nov 9, 1794.  He deeded 203 acres of land to son, Thomas in Aug 15, 1805. Days later, John wrote his Will leaving Thomas 204 Acres of additional land.  John and Mary were evidently living with Thomas in their old age. John's Will indicates that he had a bond servant and owned a number of cows, horses, swine and sheep

John Davies was born in Chester Co., PA and moved with his parents through Virginia to Orange (now Chatam) Co., NC, arriving about 1750.  John Davies resided between Cane Creek and Rock River in Chatham Co.  A corner of his land was on the river.  Part of the land apparently was inherited from his father.  According to a much later deed, Charles Davies purchased from Herncy McCullah an Aug. 2, 1758 a tract on the waters of Cane Creek.  On Jan. 21, 1761 he deeded part of this to his son Thomas who sold it July 21, 1769 to Jeremiah Piggott Sr..  On Nov. 9, 1794 Jeremiah Piggott Jr. of Orange Co. sold a 3 acre parcel to John Davies of Chatham Co.
On May 25, 1773 John Davies, planter, purchased from Henry McCullan, a 217 acre tract south of the Cane Creek adjoning outher land of Charles Davies which John later owned.  On July 7, 1794, John Davies and Isaac Marshill, received a grant of 300 acres touching on Rocky River adjoning the 217 acres.  In 1795 this grant was divided evenly by the two men.
John Davies' will, written 8th mo., 22nd day, 1805, and proved in 1807, show that John had a bond servant and owned a number of cows, horses, swine and sheep.  The will suggests that John and Mary were then living with their son Thomas, having reserved a room in the house for their own use.

A corner of his land was on the river, and part of the land was apparently inherited from his father. On Aug. 15, 1805, a few days before John wrote his will, he deeded 203 acres to his son Thomas. In his will he left him another 204 acres.  John Davies' will was written Aug. 22, 1805, and proved in 1807. It shows that he had a bond servant and owned a number of cows, horses, swine and sheep. The will suggests that John and Mary were then living with their son Thomas, having a room in the house for their own use.   Excerpts from the will - written as he had it:   "I order and Substitute my Beloved Wife Mary Davies and Son Thomas Davies- - my whole and Soal Executors and Executors of this my last will and testament of the Whole. I alow my Funeral charges and just debts to be paid first out of my Estate.  I give to my son Thomas Davies the plantation I now live on - containing two hundred and four Acres of Land to be Enjoyed and possessed by him his heirs or assigns for Ever.  I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife Mary Davies full privileges of the house and Room I now live in and benefit of the orchard and Spring as far as her own Use While She Remains my Widow and no Longer.  It is also my will for my son Thomas Davies to Suply his Mother with a suficient Quantity of Bread and Meat and all other thing Nessary for her to Susist on - except Coffy and Sweetning. Likewise to keep two Cows for her as long as she Remains my widow with him; him having the increase of said Cows - it is my Will that as they fail with age he Shall Exchange younger in their Stead and have the old one for his own use - if she Marries it is my Will She Shall have said Cows - if not - at her decease they shall by my son Thomas Davieses.  I likewise give and bequeth Unto my beloved wife Mary Davies one bay horse named Bun and a young Mare named Blase - it is my will that my son Thomas Davies shall Maintain one of his Mothers horse Creatures During her Widowhood then to be his own.  (He then gives these children two dollars each: Joseph Davies, William Davies, Sarah Piggott, John Davies, Charles Davies, Hannah Barker, Mary Shugart, Thomas Davies, Thamer Ratliff, Elizabeth Barker, and Rachel Pike).  It is my will that my bond Servant Benjamin Underwood Shall have one Mattock and the Ax that he frequently works with. I also alow my son Thomas Davies thirty dollars over the above Mentioned Legacy if he be kind to his Mother During her Widowhood - it is my will that at my Decease my son Charles Davies shall have one Hogshead and at the End of his Mother's Widowhood the pine Table one Iron foot Brack and fine shovel & bell.  I also give to my son Thomas Davies the Waggon and all the Geers and farming Utensils that is then Remaining with the Remainder part of the Bells, Hogsheads and Barrels and to pay his Brother Charles Davies Nine pounds in the room of the Waggon and at the End of his Mother's Widowhood to have the Room and furniture thereunto belonging and fire tongs Walnut table and Course Hackle.  - it is also my will that my daughter Rachel Pike at the end of her Mother's Widowhood Shall have A ten Gallon pot and Dutch oven (if not broke) it is also my will that at my death my son Thomas Davies shall have all my Swine.  I do will my Beloved Wife Mary Davies the Remainder of my Cattle and Sheep all my Cash and Cash Noates all the house household furniture and at the end of her Widowhood to Divide house furniture among all my Daughters at her own Disgression - the Cash and Cash Noates to be Eaquily divided among all my before mentioned Children both Male and female.  - but in Case my wife Mary Davies should marry I give to her as her own property two cows A feather Bead and furniture and Beadsteads A chalf Bead and furniture and Beadsteads Side Saddle and Bridle Six peuter plates A flax wheell a pewter Dish and Basin and Six Pewter spoons one Iron pot and hooks A frying pan pine Chest and four sheep.  I allow my wife to Divide all my wearing cloths among my Sons as She may judge best.

Back Creek Monthly meeting of Friends, Randolph County, North Carolina, was set up the 29th of 12th month, 1792, as authorized by the following minutes.
"At a Quarterly Meeting held at Cane Creek the 18th of 11th mo. 1792. The committee appointed last meeting to visit friends of Back Creek Preparative Meeting on account of their request of holding a Monthly Meeting: Report in writing as follows: To our Quarterly Meeting to be held at Cane Creek 12th of 11th mo. 1792. Dear Friends: We the committee appointed last meeting to visit Back Creek Preparative meeting in order to inspect their ability of holding a monthly meeting amongst themselves have complyd therewith and give it as our sense and judgment that their request be granted; which we submit to the Quarterly Meeting. - - - Zacharias Dicks,
