Maud Matilda de was born about 1157 in Clare,Suffolk,England. Maud Matilda de's father was Roger "The Good" 5th Earl de Clare and her mother was Maud or Matilda de St. Hilary du Harcouet. Her paternal grandparents were Richard de Clare , 1st Earl of Hertford ' and Adeliza de Guernons Countess de Meschines; her maternal grandparents were James Sidonis de St. Hilary Lord and Aveline de St. Hilary. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named Richard "Strongbow" 4th Earl, Richard (Sir) 6th Earl, James de, Roger de, Henry de, Mabel de, Joane de, Elena de, Aveline de, Aveline, Eveline (Aveline) de ' and Mabel. She had seven half-brothers and five half-sisters, named James, Roger, Henry, William III, Hugh II, Alan, Godfrey, Mable, Eveline, Cecily, Avice Agnes de Arundel and Joan. Based on the age of her children, I think she is a sister instead of a dau. of Richard?????
The only reason I could think of that the wealthiest man in Yorkshire, with great inheritance and position, Roger de Lacy, to marry an unknown woman of relatively mean rank would be that she was a great beauty. It would then have been because of her marriage into the de Lacy family, by c. 1190, that her brother got his preferment as treasurer. [Reedpcgen <reedpcgen@aol.com]

Maud, the wife of Roger, survived her husband, and was living about 1220-5, having had assigned to her in dower 28 librates of land in Ingoldmells and Holton le Moor, co. Taken with the problems of consanguinity when her granddaughter m. the Earl of Gloucester, the rendering of "de Clere" is preferable, and that at least in any case, we should believe that Maud was at least sister of the treasurer of the church of York, who would at that time also have been the Archdeacon of the East Riding.
