His paternal grandparents were Jacob Julian and Rachael Alexander; his maternal grandfather is Claibourne Condrey. He had six brothers and two sisters, named James B., Samuel D., Whitman H., Clairborne C., Jesse R., William Wiltshire, Alice and Elizabeth Ann. He is the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
