Her paternal grandparents were William Pytus Tumlinson and Mary Ann Boykin; her maternal grandparents are William L. Cotton and Emma Unknown. She had seven brothers and five sisters, named Bigham Earnest, Martin Raymond, William Harlery, Sr., Obie Ulee, Joseph Newton, Linzie Matthew, David Franklin, Mary Ida, Lylas Adeline, Winnie Faye, Cynthia Virginia and Estelle.
