Her paternal grandparents were John Snider and Prudence Unknown. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas R., John Charles, James W., Sarah Isabel, Nancy M. and Martha A.. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William E., Mary Jane and Elizabeth Ellen.
