David Smith married Barsheba Harrington sometime about 1790 and set
tl ed in York or Union County, South Carolina. Barsheba Harrington was t
he da ughter of John Harrington as indicated by the will of John Harringto
n, Uni on District, South Carolina, 12 November 1792, proved 16 Septemb
er 1793. " In a sick and low condition ... "beloved wife, Fanny (Frances B
urt) all es tate real and personal during life or widowhood. If she marri
ed or dieth b efore my children come of age, executors to keep estate toge
ther and ma ke the best they can of it to raise and educate the children t
ill they a ll come of age and then (and not till then) the estate to be eq
ually divid ed amongst the children, male and female, in any manner that t
he major pa rt of them shall agree upon. Friends David Smith, my son-in-la
w, and Nicho las Corry to be executors." Witnesses: Abraham Guyton, Jose

on with the Mor ehead family. Note: John Harrington's widow Frances marri
ed 2nd as his sec ond wife, Col. Robert Rutherford of Newberry County, Sou
th Carolina. Co l. Rutherford's first wife was Dorothy Brooks who was t
he mother of a ll of his children. He moved from Virginia to Chatham Count
y, North Caroli na where he was a justice of the County Court and a repres
entative to t he Third Provincial Congress which met at Hillsboro, North C
arolina in 177 5. He moved to Newberry County, South Carolina ca. 1780 whe
re he was aga in a Justice of the County Court, elected to the House of Re
presentativ es in the State Legislature, Sheriff of Ninety Six District, a
nd a large-s cale planter.
David and Barsheba Smith are found in the 1790 Federal Census of York Co
un ty, Camden District, South Carolina.
