nd particular ly ill-fitted to resist an invasion from Indians . All busin
ess was suspen ded, harvests were ungathered, and homes deserted. Those w
ho lived on t he outskirts of teh towns crowed into garrisons, or into t
he larger house s, which had been as strongly fortified as possible. Eve
