Her paternal grandfather was John Cannon Skaggs and her paternal grandmother is Lucinda Shofner. She had six brothers named Pleasant Carter, Richard C., James B., Samuel I., Herman Carter and Willie Robert. She had six half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John Benjamin, William Franklin, Robert W., Macklin Elisha, Jefferson Franklin, Alfred Thomas, Mary E., Rutha Jane, Sarah Ann and Mary Loucinda.
