Van B. was born in January 1896 in Knott Co., Kentucky.1 Van B.'s father was Leander C. Ritchie and his mother was Dulcenia Ritchie. His paternal grandparents are Samuel Ritchie and Chole Hall; his maternal grandfather is Gabriel Ritchie and his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Ritchie.
