In records uncovered, the Prestridge Family first appeared on the Amer
ic an scene in Virginia, in August, 1664. Edward Prestridge was o
ne of 30 pe rsons settled on a 1500 acre grant to John West in Accomack
Co., Virginia.
John Prestridge was transported from Hertfordshire, England to Virgin
ia 17 40.
Wm. Prestridge and his wife, May, were two of four witness
es to a de ed in Spottsylvaniia Co, Virginia.
Most of this data was taken from a book found in the Genealogical Lib
ra ry of the Morman Church in Mesa, Arizona.
The Prestridges who formed part of the migration westward, were very pr
ol ific and spread through South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabam
a, a nd on to Texas.
As our branch of the family came from Alabama, it is interesting to kn
ow t hey got there. A special census was taken of the Mississippi Terri
to ry in 1816 in the process of Alabama becoming a State. Included was a
ll t he land ceded by the Creek Indianns on June 29, 1815. Monroe Count
y, Miss issippi incompased most of the present State of Alabama. In th
at 1816 spe cial census of Monroe County, a John E. Prestridge and a Jose
ph N. Prestr idge were listed as residents, and remained in the state
for an unspecified length of time.
