Murdered in Louisville, Kentucky
Hewitt was employed as a painter for the Louisville and Nashville Railr
oa d. He was in Louisville with a friend, Albert R. Masterson, wh
en he g ot into an argument with Mrs. Margaret F. Rogers because she was w
eari ng a man's sweater. Mrs. Rogers became outraged and fired three s
ho ts at Hewitt, one struck him in the back under the heart. The incide
nt oc curred at the gate of Mrs. Roger's home, 3031 Portland Avenue. T
he murd er occurred at 01:20 a.m., 16 August 1933, and was witnesssed by t
wo poli ce officers who were driving by and saw the shooting. They wrestl
ed the s moking gun from Mrs. Rogers and rushed Hewitt to Louisville Ci
ty Hospit al where he was pronounced ead on arrival. Georgia was appoint
ed aministr ator of Hewitt's estate on 2 May 1934.
