Eliza Jane was born on September 25th, 1823 in Franklin Co., Virginia.1 Eliza Jane's father was Jubal Payne and her mother was Rhoady Basham. Her maternal grandparents were William Basham and Sarah Sally Shrewsbury. She had eight brothers and six sisters, named Dudley H., Richard H., William B., James, Simeon, Jubal, Jr., Joel, John W., Nancy, Margaret, Agnes, Mary D., Sely and Martha. She is the seventh youngest of the fifteen children.-
