Ralph Whitsett Means 
Ralph Whitsett was born on June 21st, 1823 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 Ralph Whitsett's father was Ralph Benjamin Means and his mother was Hadessa Nancy Whitsett. His paternal grandparents were Adam Means and Margaret Hutchinson; his maternal grandparents are William Whitsett and Hadessa Crawford. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, John T., Margaret, Hadessa, Nancy and Emily. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 75 on February 2nd, 1899 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried on February 11th, 1899 in Allegheny Cem., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 1 General Notes

ial ly Ralph was a hatter (engaged in the hat business) on Federal Str
ee t. He gave up the hat business and went into the drug industry in 1
84 whe re he owned and operated a pharmacy on the corner of Federal Stre
et and No rth Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA.
The 1850 Census shows Ralph and his wife living with James Carroll, a pa
tt ern maker by trade, his wife Sarah, and their children: Eliza age 2

so sho ws an Alexander Wilson living on one side and a Mathew Fleming livi
ng on t he other side. The 1870 census shows him living at 89 Wood Stre
et and h is occupation as "hats, caps, and furs" at the same address. T

y, PA
Ralph's children from his first marriage lived with their step-mother a
ft er Ralph died.
Although the name originally was Whitsett, various transcription erro
rs ap peared to have occurred in addition to Ralph seemingly changing h
is midd le name to Whitesell.
