His paternal grandfather was Benjamine Means and his paternal grandmother is Ellenda Bickerdite. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named Ahijans, Benjamin Jackson, Joseph W., Richard Smith, George Adrine, Allen Wallace, Melinda, Sarah, Elizabeth, Catherine, Lydia, Twin Daughters, Eleanor and Daughter 3.
