Alexander Gallatin McNutt 
Alexander Gallatin was born on September 12th, 1802 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia.1 Alexander Gallatin's father was Alexander McNutt and his mother was Rachael Grigsby. His paternal grandfather was John Alexander McNutt and his paternal grandmother is Catherine Rebecca Anderson; his maternal grandparents were John,3rd Grigsby and Elizabeth Porter. He had five brothers and eight sisters, named John, Anderson, Joseph Porter, Benjamin Franklin, Crawford, Margaret, Elizabeth, Martha, Rebecca, Jannetta, Katherine Anderson, Frances Anne and Sarah Alexander. He died at the age of 46 on October 22nd, 1848 in Cockrum's Cross Roads, De Sota Co., Mississippi.1 General Notes

Alexander Gallatin McNutt was born in Rockbridge County, Virgini
a, in la te 1801 or early 1802. He attended Washington College and studi
ed law befo re moving to Mississippi, where he ultimately settled in Vicks
burg. He con ducted a lucrative law practice, during which he demonstrat
ed a flair f or politics and a knack for public oratory. After serving sev
eral ter ms in the state legislature, he was elected as Mississippi's elev
enth gove rnor in 1837 and re-elected two years later. In 1847, he ran f
or a se at in the United States Senate, but he was defeated by Henry S. Fo
te. He d ied on October 22, 1848, in DeSoto County while on a political ca
mpaign.
McNutt published his humorous sketches of sporting life in the wilder
ne ss from 1844 to 1847 in William Trotter Porter's Spirit of the Time
s. H is tales, written under the pseudonym "The Turkey Runner," usually in
vol ve two characters, both of whom work for the "Captain" (McNutt) on a p
lant ation in Mississippi. Though his tales today are recognized as no mo
re th an a representative of Southwestern Humor, during his day Porter rec
ogniz ed McNutt in his collection The Big Bear of Arkansas as a "formidab
le riva l" of Thomas Bangs Thorpe, considered one of the pre-eminent autho
rs of th at genre.
