James McAdams was an early settler of Orange County, North Carolina. Ac
co rding to the 1755 tax list he had one white poll (33). In May 17
78 he w as appointed to value the property for Orange District (34). In N
ovemb er 1778 he was appointed to attend the next court (35). In Februa
ry 17 79 he was one of the jurors selected to lay off a new road between O
ran ge Old Court House to the Guilford Road (36). The value of his prop
er ty in that year was 1,153 pounds (37). He was the recipient of a la
nd gra nt on 3 September 1779 (38), and the next year he was one of tho
se select ed to work on the road (39). In both 1780 and 1782 he was a jur

He owned 350 acres of land and had 2 white polls and 1 black po
ll in 17 90 (41). On 15 February 1797 he sold land to Joseph McAdams (42
). In h is will dated 30 April 1806 and proved in February 1807, he mentio
ned h is wife Rebeckah, sons James McAdams and James Hopkins, and his gran
dson A bsalom. The reference to his son James Hopkins was probably to h
is son-in -law. The executors were his sons Joseph and James, and the wit
nesses we re James McAdams, Jr., and William Crutch- field.
Rebecca McAdams left a will dated 3 October 1808 which was proved in Au
gu st 1809 in which she made bequests to her son James, his daughter Rebe
cc a, and her daughters Egness McAdams and Elizabeth Blair (43).
