John A.'s father was Bluford Griffin and his mother was Elizabeth McCaffery.  His paternal grandfather was David Griffin and his paternal grandmother is Sarah Unknown; his maternal grandparents are William Byrd McCafferty and Nancy Newton Springer. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Ditus, Thomas, Emma C., Louisa and Margaret. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named David, William B., James Cornelius, Nancy T., Mary, Matilda, Jane L. and Sarah E..
