Eric Ray Edgerton, 82, Venice, died Aug. 23, 1996. He was born Apr
il 1 2, 1914, in Chapel Hill, NC and came to Venice 29 years ago from Fo
rt Le e, VA. He retired as an Army Lt. Col in 1967. He served on the Ven
ice Pl anning Commission for 12 years, the Venice Code Enforcement Board f
or thr ee years and the Venice Airport Advisory Board for four year
s. He receiv ed his bachelor of science degree in agricultural engineeri
ng from North C arolina State in 1938. He was a member of the Myakka Pin
es Golf Club a nd former member of the Lake Venice Golf Club. Survivors i
nclude a son, E ric R. Jr. of Long Valley, NJ; a daughter, Kathleen Paxton
-Edgerton of B ig Pine Key; a brother, Dock of Pinkney, NC; two sisters, L
elabelle Stro ud of Pink Hill, NC and Billie Niles of Indianapolis; and t
wo grandchildre n. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Farley Fun
eral Home, Venic e. The graveside service will be at 11:00 Tuesday in Ven
ice Memorial Gard ens.

Eric R. Edgerton graduated from North Carolina State University in 19
38 wi th a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He entered the U. S. Ar
my as a 2 nd Lieutenant through an ROTC commission. He retired in 19
67 as a Lt. Col onel and moved to Venice, Florida. In 1972 he was on t
he Venice Airport A dvisory Board for 4 years then appointed to the planni
ng commission. Duri ng the next 12 years he developed a reputation for ma
king well-informed de cisions based on facts. His leadership qualities l
ed to an appointme nt as commission
chairman.
Catherine and Eric were married on 28 March 1941 at Ft. Benning, Geo
rg ia by U. S. Army Chaplain Col. Earl D. Weed. Col. Weed was Catherine
's un cle, married to her mother's sister,
Beulah Basham.
