Manervia was born in Kentucky.¹ Manervia's father was Littleberry Dowell and her mother was Sarah Payne. Her paternal grandparents were Micajah Dowell and Frances (Fanny) Meador. She had six brothers and three sisters, named George, Riley, James Corbett, John Wesley, Alexander H., Ezra, Mary "Polly", Nancy and Eliza Jane.
