Marshall was born on November 3rd, 1857 in LaRue Co., Kentucky.1 Marshall's father was Joseph DeSpain and his mother is Sarah Morrison. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William Henry, Joseph Thomas, James R., Lewis, George Washington, Robert, Elizabeth and Malinda A.. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
