Second Marriage Information In 1988 Alabama I G I
The life of George Counts has been difficult to reconstruct, but fami
ly h istory contains some interesting stories about him. We know from cens
us re cords of his children that he was born in South Carolina. Family sto
ries s ay that he came to Texas as a young man and helped to fight for Tex
as's in dependence in the 1830's. He apparently married Nancy Matthews som
eti me in the mid to late 1830's. Two children Larkin Chilton and Hasten A
lexa nder were born to this marriage.
Family stories indicate that Nancy (Matthews) Counts died shortly aft
er H asten Alexander was born and that Hasten was raised by his grandmoth
er Mat thews and two single aunts in the Matthews family. There is a re
co rd of a second marriage by George Counts in 1846 to Caroline R
ay a nd he is also listed in the 1855 Alabama State Census. No further rec
ord h as been found of George and Caroline Counts after 1855. And his pare
nts a re yet to be determined.
