Rita never married. She worked a nurse in a V.A. Hospital in Temple. S
he d ied of Cancer. She ask my mother and father to help her with the pro
ce ss of dieing and to help her mother , my fathers sister, with the fa
ct th at she would die before her mother. Rita was the apple of Vernon ey
e. Wh en he married my Aunt Ruby my grandmother was very upset and ev
en mo re so when she found out that Ruby was to have a child. My Aunt a
nd Unc le married very late in life and My Aunt Ruby had polio as a chil
d. My Gra ndmother did not think that Ruby could carry and take ca
re of a child. I t hink that my Grandmother loved this grandchild over t
he rest of her grandc hildren. I remember how my mother commented how s
he changed her attitude a bout this child once it came into her life. I al
ways felt sorry for Rita b ecause her father died when she was in her tee
ns and that she felt she h ad to take care of her mother for the rest of h
er life. She did have one r elationship with a married man that never ca
me to any thing. She never h ad children. Just her work and her mothe
r. I was very proud of how my moth er and father took care of Rita in h
er last days. Rita ask my mother n ot to tell her mother how sick she w
as and not to let her know that the ca ncer had moved into her brain. My A
unt was very angre with my mother wh en she found out that my mother had d
one this for Rita. My Mother told h er that she could only honor her la
st wishes and request just as she wou ld honor Rubys last wished who was a
lso dieing of cancer. Rita died 3 yea rs before her mother. It was very ha
rd for Ruby to lose Vernon and Rita.
