John was born in 1857 in Kentucky.1 John's father is Franklin Combs and his mother is Vina Ritchie. His maternal grandfather was John Ritchie and his maternal grandmother is Sylvania Sizemore. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Austin, Isaac, Jesse, Larkin, Alexander, Armelda, Rachel, Louisa Jane and Nancy. He is the oldest of the ten children.General Notes
