James “Jim” Coates, whose father was also named James, came from Virg
in ia to what is now Tennessee by horseback. He had two brothers, John, w
ho s ettled in North Carolina and William, who remained in Virginia.
After coming to Hickman County, James “Jim” lived for several yea
rs at L og Shoal Island in Easleys Bend. After the Civil War, he mov
ed to Defeat ed Creek and remained there until around 1880. He married An
na Johnson. Th ey were parents of Sarah, James Alexander, Griffin, Ma
ry J, Cordelia, Mati lda and Samuel Johnson Coates.
Jim and Anna are buried in the Green Cemetery on Defeated Creek. T
wo of th eir sons served in Co. D, 48th Infantry during the Civil War.
