Her paternal grandparents were Green, Captain Bouldin and Mary Graves; her maternal grandparents were Eli Hammond and Mary Owen. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Hammond, Green, Eli Shelby, Mary Purnell Tabitha, Elizabeth G., Susan Eleanor, Catherine C., Sally M. and Betty P. H..
