Hammond was the first of the  Bouldin family to come to Texas, having ar
ri ved initially about 1846 to expore the prospects and begin acquiri
ng la nd for the subsequent settlement of the larger family. He married h
is cous in, Martha Jane, who had been orphaned by the death of her paren
ts about t he time whe was 12. She was adopted by Colonel William Graves B
ouldin , a nd married Hammond when whe was about 16. H ammond becaume a Ph
ysician aft er his wief's death in 1851, served in the Confederacy as a Li
eutena nt in Company K, 8th Texas Cavalry. He had married thedaughter of C
olon el W. W. Browning, Elizabeth, and continued to practice medicine in C
happe ll Hill until 1889, when he sold his 400 acre farm and moved to Law
n, Tayl or Co. Texas where he purchased a 710 acre ranch and built a ho
me at the a ge of 64. In 1890 he added 320 acres to his ranch . He and Eli
zabeth  a re both buried in a small grave site, enclosed by an iron fenc
e, and surou nded by live oaks in the garden of the original home place.

In the life of De. Hammond Bouldin was exemplified the love of God, of c
ou ntry, and of his fellow man. In the flush of youth , at his country's c
al l, he joined the 8th Texas Cavalry, and till the str of the Confedera
cy we nt down in defeat he was faithful to his duties as soldier and surge
on, a nd through the successes and failures of succeecing years his love a
nd loy alty to the South and the principles for which he fought never  fal
tere d. He was a Confederate soldier to the last. As a lover of his kin
d, he de lighted in later years to gather about him his friends and comrad
es, a nd on every suitable occasion it was his pleasure to entertain th
em wi th a gracious cordiality and hospitality. In later years, when ey
es grew d im and feet were faltering, the word of God was a light for h
is guidance a nd a stay for his feeblemess, and his passage into the beyo
nd was with ho pe of a better like. D.r Bouldin was born in Madison Count
y, Alabama. He d ied at Lawn, Texas, on the morning of April 16, having pa
ssed but short ly into his eighty first year. He went to Texas in 1850 a
nd settled inWash ington County. Though twice married , only a son and gra
ndchildren survi ve him. The last years of his life were passed a Law
n, in Taylor County, T exas.
