Her paternal grandparents were Levi Sampson Bassham and Sarah Smith. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William L., John Cletian, Joseph B., Leonard S., Sallie E., Dizzie M., Julia Gertrude and Remis D.. She was the third youngest of the nine children.
