His paternal grandfather was Fountain Fletcher Basham and his paternal grandmother is Louisa Angelina Howard. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Claude M., Earl Leondist, Gladys, Wilbur, Bertha O. and Lula M.. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
