A. F. Bassham is the present efficient sheriff and ex-officio colle
ct or of Fulton County, Ark., and is well-known throughout the coun
ty as a m an of ability and honor. He was born in Lawrence County, Tenn
., January 2 5, 1859, and is a son of S. H. and Elizabeth (Ray) Bassham w
ho were bo rn in Tennessee and Alabama, September 19, 1829, and Janua
ry 1, 1830, resp ectively. The former grew to maturity and was marri
ed in his native Stat e, being there engaged in the pursuit of farming, b
ut after the late wa r, in which he served on the Confederate side, he emi
grated to Arkansa s, in 1874, where he followed the same occupation, b
ut is now residi ng in Salem.
He is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the FreeWill Bap
ti st Church. His father, Richard Bassham, was a native and a farmer of Te
nne ssee, and was married to a Miss Pennekuff, who died in Lawrence Count
y, Te nn. In all probability the maternal grandfather, Benjamin Ray, w
as a nati ve of Alabama. A. F. Bassham was reared to the age of fourteen y
ears in Te nnessee, since which time he has been a resident of Fulton Coun
ty, Ark. Be ing desirous of supplementing the primary education which he r
eceive d, in the vicinity of his home, with a more thorough knowledge he e
nter ed the graded school at Mountain Home, Ark., where his career was mar
ked w ith rapid advancement. Now thoroughly qualified to enter upon a prof
ession al career, he engaged in teaching school, and was one of the popul
ar educa tors of Fulton County for several years.
He gave up this work, however, to assume the responsible duties of h
is pr esent office, to which he was elected September 3, 1888, by the Demo
crat ic party, of which he has always been an active member. He is a Mast
er Mas on, and is secretary of Viola Lodge No 399; also belonging to Sal
em Lod ge No 28, IOOF October 15, 1881, he was married to Miss Allie Brow
n, who w as born in 1862, and by her has an interesting little family of t
hree chil dren: Frederick, Maude, and William. Mr. Bassham owns a good fa
