Nathan Basham was born May 21, 1808 in Campbell County, Tennessee a
nd gr ew up in that part of the county known as Powell Valley. On Octob
er 9, 18 28 he married a young lady from North Carolina, Elizabeth Campbel
l. Th ey continued to reside in the area and started their family. Th
ey had 3 c hildren, James K. born July 28, 1829, died December 24, 1838; W
illiam H. b orn June 11, 1832, died November, 1832 and Sarah E. born Febru
ary 29, 183 6, died May, 1838.
Since all three of their children had died, they decided to move to n
ew c ountry, with Nathan walking, leading a horse his pregnant wife was ri
din g. They arrived in Ray County, Missouri in 1839 and selected a site s
imil ar in appearance to their Tennessee home, south and west of Millvil
le to m ake their new home. They then had four more children, Wiley Wesle
y, born S eptember 28, 1839, died March 8, 1899; Henry Willis, born Janua
ry 12, 184 1, died May 9, 1886; John Ellis, born October 17, 1843, died De
cember 2 1, 1863; and Franklin Price born September 19, 1852, died July 3
0, 191 9. Nathan's wife died December 29, 1877.
Nathan continued to live in the same house with his youngest son, Frank
li n, who by now had a wife and a son of his own, until his death on Febr
ua ry 27, 1886. Nathan and Elizabeth are both buried in the Belt Ceme
