Malissa Jane was born on April 12th, 1854 in Tennessee.1 Malissa Jane's father was John Bassham and her mother was Elizabeth Roper. Her paternal grandparents were John Basham and Elizabeth Finley. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John William, Joseph E., Thomas G. W., Eliza Ellen Eveline and Josephine Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the six children.
