Joseph Dempsey was born on May 23rd, 1861 in Clifton Mill, Breckenridge Co., Ky.1 Joseph Dempsey's father was Allen Dowell Basham and his mother was Elizabeth D WOLF. His paternal grandparents were Obediah Basham and Celia Dowell. He had three brothers named George Washington, Thomas McClellan (Tom) and Barksdale P.. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had eight half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William Francis, Micajah, Daniel James, Henry Dalton, Allen Dowell II, Luther D. (Seth), Robert Houston, Samuel Logan, Mary B. and Paulina Ellen. He died at the age of 75 on May 19th, 1937 in Van Zant, Breckenridge Co., Ky.1 General Notes
