Joseph A. was born about December 1830 in Virginia.1 Joseph A.'s father was John Basham and his mother was Catherine Ball. His paternal grandparents were William Loyd Basham and Ama Meador. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Allen M., Abraham P, Augustus, William M., John S., Elizabeth, Mary A. and Rebecca Catherine. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
