John Lewis, Sr. was born on March 19th, 1877 in Mercer Co., West Virginia.1 John Lewis, Sr.'s father was David Allen Basham and his mother was Minerva Jane Cox. His paternal grandparents were Meador Basham and Polly (Mary) Hans. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named James Henderson, George Matthew (Preacher), Henry, Andrew J., Charles Lewis, Roy D., Allen, Mary J., Hattie Virginia and Gracie Pearl. He was the second oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 64 on March 15th, 1942 in Farley Hill, Raleigh Co., W Va.1 General Notes
