His paternal grandparents were Manoah Stone Basham and Elizabeth Armes. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Joel H., John 'Wesley', Ada Ellen, Jesse Green, James Alford, Curvie Dee, Cova Frances and Clara Girtrude.
