GUS O. BASHAM Administrative Law Judge Gus O. Basham, 94, retired admin
is trative law judge with the Federal Maritime Commission, died of respira
to ry failure Sept 9 at the Leewood Nursing Home in Annandale. Mr. Bas
ha m, a resident of Arlington who had lived in the Washington area since 1
92 2, was born in Caneyville, Ky.  He attended Western Kentucky State Col
le ge and graduated from George Washington University, where he also ea
rn ed a law degree.
In the mid-1920's, he went to work at the Interstate Commerce Commiss
io n, where he worked on railroad rates.  In 1936, he transferred to t
he US M aritime Commission, the forerunner of the Federal Maritime Commiss
ion, a nd worked on shipping rates.  He was an administrative law judge wh
en he r etired in 1968. His wife of 66 years, Frances L. Basham, died in M
arch 199 2. Survivors include a daughter, Frances B. Schmitz of Annapoli
s, and t wo grandchildren. A son, Willima R Basham, died in 1986, and a da
ughter, A nne L. Basham, died in 1991. Obituary from Washington DC Po
