J. Miles was born in 1861.1 J. Miles' father was Benjamin J. Allen and his mother was Mary Ann Dial. His paternal grandparents were Martin C. Allen and Elizabeth Vice. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James B., Joseph B., Nancy Jane and Frances Catherine. He is the second youngest of the five children.
