His paternal grandparents were John Calhoun Allen and Mary Ann Holcombe. He had two brothers and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Harmon Samuel, James Walter, Mary Elizabeth, Anna Idella, Leona Bell, Sarah Eliza and M. B..
