His paternal grandparents were George Crosby and Susanna Evans. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joshua, John Richard, Amos, David Porter, Angeline C, Nancy Sarah, Ruth Jane, Elizabeth, Indiana, Hettie and Susannah.
