I n the reign of Ki ng Stephen (1135 - 1154), a charter was gr a nt ed to
John,
s on of Reginal d de Ar gentein, c onfirmin g t o h im and his h e irs the

by
his fathe r. Pres umabl y on t he basis of this ch arte r, VCH H ertfo
rdshire
(vol. 3, p .182) c alls John an 'adhe rent' of Ste p hen, and s uggests t
ha
t
a
castle o f the 'motte a nd bailey' type, whose r e mains l i e t o the eas
t
of
the churchya r d i n Great Wymondley, may ha v e been er ected by Jo hn as
a
manorial strongho l d during th e anarchy of Ste ph e n' s reign.
Evidentl y th e mills of Icklef ord, wh ich his father Reginal d h a d
held
for
life, were st ill the subje ct of conte nt ion b etween the Arge nte ins
and
Ramsey Abbey. But the disput e wa s settled in favour of the abbey by
Stephen's successor Hen ry II, who is s ued a charter , dated to 1155-1162
,
com ma ndin g that the mills, w hi ch ha d been claimed by Joh n, should b
e
h eld b y th e abbey, as stipulated by H en ry I's charter. A t abou t the
sa me
time, John accounted in Hertfordsh ir e fo r a crown debt (Pip e Roll ,
115 8-59 ).
In the f eudal returns of 1166, John ap pears as the holde r o f on e
knig ht's f ee of th e barony of Robert F ol iot, and tw o knights' fee s
of
th e fe e of Sk ipton. The first of the se r ep resents the manor of
Melbourn
,
in Ca mbridges hire (VCH Cam bridges hire) ; th e second, accor ding to
Far rer
(vol. 1, p .238 ), refers to Har l ow in E ssex, a lthough there doe s not
see
m
to be any l a ter record of th e family holding l and there.
John's na me occurs a lso as a witn ess to two c harte rs for religi ous
houses in the ar ea: one for St Edmu nd's Ab bey (Doug las) a n d theother
for Dunstable Prior y ( Fowler). The latt e r chart er is dated ten
tatively
to between 1170 and 1177; i f so, i t must belong to t he closing ye ar s
of
